Where It Began

Have you ever been to ArtHop? If you have, you might be surprised to find out that it all started in Gallery Row. Except it was not called Gallery Row back then.

If you’ve never been to Gallery Row, it is a collection of galleries and businesses nestled within Van Ness Ave. and Mono St. in downtown Fresno. Inside these buildings, there are many visually stunning things to see, from sculptures as tall as a person to murals as big as entire buildings. Arthop is an event that started as a way for local artists to showcase their work. It is on the 1st Thursday every month, from 5pm-9pm.

The Downtown Fresno partnership initiated the "Around the Block" event series with the aim of spotlighting lesser-known blocks in downtown. Inspired by the galleries on Van Ness and Mono, this series aimed to highlight their presence. Despite the area hosting numerous galleries, it lacked a distinct identity. When invited to join "Around the Block," the local galleries enthusiastically embraced the opportunity. They revealed a longstanding desire to be recognized collectively as "Gallery Row," a dream that the event series helped them bring to life.

Today

Today, Gallery Row is easily recognizable by the banners adorning the light posts, proudly announcing its presence. From Clay Hand Studios to the Downtown Artist Gallery, there is something uniquely creative for everyone to experience and enjoy.

One of the owners of Clay Hand Studios, Nanette Mattos, shared fascinating insights into the artistic community that has flourished here. Nanette emphasized the sense of community and collaboration that defines Gallery Row, where artists support each other and collectively contribute to the area's unique charm.

Gallery Row has grown from its humble beginnings into a celebrated cultural landmark, offering a rich mix of artistic expression for all to enjoy. In addition, it is walking distance from the Brewery District, so come to downtown Fresno for a drink and then head on over to the galleries! Whether you’re a seasoned art lover or just curious about the local art scene, a visit to Gallery Row promises a great experience.
