Treat your most starved sense (hearing) to a night out with the Programme Hifi team. Our next listening session will focus on a record label founded in Berlin-Neukölln at SAVVY Contemporary, a space for international visual and performing artists. The gallery invites creators from around the globe to address current issues in art, science, sociology, and philosophy.
SAVVY is currently based in one of the most ethnically and culturally mixed areas of Berlin, encompassing large groups of recently arrived citizens from Ghana, Cameroun, and Nigeria, many of whom have settled in the Africanisches Viertel, or African Quarter, as well as inhabitants from Turkey, Poland, China, the Middle East and the countries of former Yugoslavia, among others.
The SAVVY team is often found working in exhibition spaces, developing institutional practices to connect with local communities. Offering coffee, tea, home-cooked food, or wine to visitors, SAVVY inscribes hospitality into the art space.
Grab a friend (or three) and come by Saint Joaquin on Wednesday, March 16th. Come early and stay late for good vibes, natural wine, music appreciation, and conversation.
FAQ
What is a listening session?
Listening parties are sensory experiences that are pretty hard to top. A listening session or listening party is a gathering where an album, single, or entire music programme is played and enjoyed contextually, communally, uninterrupted, and in the best sonic detail possible. It’s about bringing back the lost art of deep listening.
How is the event structured?
The evening will start with a conversation about the hi-fi system, the process of finding and collecting vinyl, connecting with history through records, and the significance of deep listening in the current digital age. Then we’ll get into the grooves. We’ll play recordings and chat briefly during the first hour, building up to the focus music. After a short intermission, we’ll play an entire album without interruption in the second hour.
Why is there a no-phone policy?
We want to invite people to slow down and switch off. Events like this exist to remind us to nourish our most starved sense: hearing. Silence is paramount at a listening session. We ask guests to mute their social media pings, and to keep conversations low and to a minimum. Feel free to chat and take as many photos as you’d like during intermission, and at the end of the presentation.
