Dreamstastical takes the viewer into the universe of Kezia Harrell: a fantastic mirror of our own world, where African-descended beings inhabit dreamscapes of unparalleled beauty and grace. Hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio, Harrell graduated from San Francisco Art Institute in 2017 where she received her BFA in Painting. Currently based in San Francisco and Los Angeles, Harrell’s practice engages with a diverse array of media from massive oil paintings to sculpture in the form of ragdolls. Dreamtastical features a selection of drawings on paper made primarily with alcohol marker, a medium Harrell has worked with extensively for her graphic novel, Bananahead-Baby. In the Dreamtastical universe, Harrell lovingly conjures a space that allows for a formation of a black identity outside of this world and its heavy historical burden of intergenerational trauma. By situating her surreal apparitions in this realm, Harrell effectively subverts the discourse of the white lens and its caricatured and stereotyped art historical rendering of the black subject.

Fres.Co is a grassroots space for conscious cultural workers, movement builders, entrepreneurs, and artists to share their gifts with the community and vis versa. Whether it’s co-locating for our “9-5” jobs or offering workshops on art making, policy/research, or spoken word we hope to create a physical location where minds can meld and dreams can manifest into reality.
